Bonus PEX - Linguistics 341

For this exercise, you only need to produce 8 words in total!

So, I need you to produce 8 words which don't have any meaning.
The first word is "nallit", and it should be produced with stress on the first syllable. The second words is "nallit", and it should be produced with stress on the second syllable. The third word is "kabest", and it should be produced with stress on the first syllable. The fourth words is "kabest", and it should be produced with stress on the second syllable. For these four words, you should produce them like you would as if they were English words. E.g. the first word "nallit" should be [-lət], the underlined is stressed and the second syllable has a reduced vowel (shorter) vowel. The second word, "nallit" should be [nə- lɪt], where the first syllable has a reduced vowel, and the second syllable is stressed. The same goes for "kabest". The first should be [-bəst], and the second should be [kə-bɛst]. As a native speaker, you should be able to produce these even better than I can, but I am providing the examples of how I produced them here:

NAllit.

naLLIT

KAbest

kaBEST
------

The fifth word is "bosa", and it should be produced with stress on the first syllable. The sixth words is "bosa", and it should be produced with stress on the second syllable.

The seventh word is "keno", and it should be produced with stress on the first syllable. The eighth words is "keno", and it should be produced with stress on the second syllable.

For these four words, you should produce them like you hear them in the examples, as if you are Serbian because these are based on Serbian. E.g. the first word "bosa" should be [BO-sa], the underlined part is stressed, and none of the vowels is reduced. The first vowel might be longer than the second, and it is not a diphthong - "Boʊsa", that is, it should not be produced as [oʊ] sequence present in words such as "ode", "load", "bode". Instead, you may think of it as only the first part of the diphthong [oʊ] and after it -sa = bosa. The [a] in bosa should be produced like a full vowel, but it will still be shorter than the first vowel because you are stressing the first syllable. It is more like saying "aaaa" to the doctor when they ask you to do so. The second word "bosa" is produced in the same manner, but with stress or emphasis on the second syllable = [bo-SA]. Also, no reduction or short vowels, such as [bo-sə] or [bə-sa]. The same goes for "keno". [e] in this case is not [eɪ] as in "hey", "eh", "pay", but it is more like e in bed, but a bit longer. [o] is also not an [oʊ], but the [o] as in bosa. The first should be [KE-no], and the second [ke-NO]. Remember, Serbian does not have diphthongs, so try producing the vowels as monophthongs and pay attention to the stress location. Here you go the example productions of these:

When finished, you may upload your 8 recordings to D2L under Bonus PEX assignment. This assignment is a bonus assignment so there are technically no wrong answers. It also won't appear on your D2L grade, but I will have it in my grade book if you complete it.

Have fun!
